Best of Cellar Dwellers: Vintage Strength Training

Product Information

Presented by Steve Jeck

You want old school training? Here it is. You'll feel right at home with this highlights DVD of the first 20 episodes of "Cellar Dwellers," the cable access weight training show that Steve Jeck and Chris Kennedy produced from 1996-1998. You'll get 20-rep squats (of course), all the major lifts, odd lifts, stone lifts, some Highland implements--even a truck pull. It's shot mostly in Steve's garage, in temperatures from the 20s to the 90s. . . you know, just like your workouts! Train alongside the master philosopher of stones and strength in real workouts for real people living in the real world. About 1 hour. DVD/NTSC version.

Rick Sample, of Silverback Strength Systems, LLC, gives Steve’s DVD his solid and enthusiastic (without hysteria and hyperbole) stamp of approval:

“Several months ago, Steve let me know that he had a new project in the works. Between 1996 and 1998, he and a friend, Chris Kennedy, had produced 41 episodes of a show entitled Cellar Dwellers for public access television. The new project would be a compilation DVD of the highlights of those shows. Obviously, I was eager to get my copy. I had recently purchased several videos from some well-known powerlifting coaches and competitors and had been disappointed by the dry content, reliance on support gear, and chemically enhanced performances.

Cellar Dwellers (DVD), on the other hand, was very informative and applicable to regular folks with a passion for strength and a disdain for the modern health club mind-set. Without a single selectorized machine, Steve and Chris demonstrate the core functional movements that anyone seeking to empower themselves can use. This minimalist approach harkens back to the old days of strength training that many of us began with, and still love. In stark contrast to the oiled-up posers that are so popular among the muscle media, Steve and Chris train the old fashioned way, at home, and sometimes in temperatures cold enough to see their breath. As I watched the video for the third time, I wished that it had been available 20 years ago when I began my lifting career with no proper guidance whatsoever.

"Some of the main topics covered on the DVD are squats, preferably the 20 rep variety, bench press, deadlift, bodyweight exercises with partners, odd lifts, neck work, highland games implements, pulling exercises, and a simple total body routine.

"Along with the serious training information, the viewer will learn the technique for Shakespeare squats, the tune of the Cellar Dwellers ballad, and the taste of the Cellar Dweller Blender Bomb.

"What the viewer will not be bothered with is irrelevant muscle and fiction philosophy, painted-on tans, baby oil, bikini briefs, artificially enhanced, non-functional physiques, and machine-based training advice.

"What this video lacks in slick editing and graphics it makes up for in wholesome content and old-school motivation. I was happy to show this to my two budding strength enthusiasts and have no hesitation in allowing Steve to be an example to them of how a strength athlete should behave and perform, both in and out of the gym.”
